-breaking storm for them. new york city's probably going to be in the 12 to 18-inch range. here in boston, we are under blizzard warnings now. blizzard conditions expected with the prolonged time of wind and heavy snow. the snow is really picking up in boston right now. the radar showing it's all snow. temperatures there below freezing and the timing is such that the snow will continue to pick up over the next few hours. by nightfall, probably two to four inches of snow. blizzard conditions this evening. probably 25 to 40 hello mile-her hof sustained winds and through the night and even rising to 35 to 60-mile-per-hour range. 12 to 18 inches more falling and then tomorrow morning beginning to see it taper off and additional five inches could fall and blizzard conditions for a while longer, perhaps even after the snow tapers off and visibility will be very low. we'll continue to watch all of new england, as well as new york city, which is under that blizzard threat, as well. you're under a blizzard warning from new york northward and out toward long island and seeing the possibility of gusty w

to the west and go to northern new jersey and the new york city area notice the snow is gradually ending from the west to the east. central and eastern connecticut, you still have plenty of snow. it's not the case in eastern connecticut, rhode island, and the boston area and all of coastal maine, they're seeing occasional bouts of heavy snow. some of these bands are still pretty strong and that's going to continue to be the case for much of the morning. in fact, where you see the blue that's an additional 3 to 6 inches of snow could fall before the end of the day and that certainly does seem like that could be reasonable. >> how about the danger of flooding, especially in areas hit hardest by superstorm sandy, david? >> that's a good question. i know as far south as atlantic city during high tide we saw moderate coastal flooding and wash in that area. the winds now not only for the jersey shore and long island connecticut, now have it going offshore. the coastal flood warnings are confined along the massachusetts and maine shoreline. and, again, that should graduall

moving into virginia and north carolina. we have torrential downfalls right now. you see new york city is at 33 degrees. that's going to be an area where we will see that snow start off as rain and then it changes in the back side of the storm. so most of today, it's okay in new york city but then it turns into tonight. we do are blizzard warnings in the bright pink here. that's an area where we could end up with two feet of snow. there's only really been four snowstorms with two feet of snow in boston. this could be the fifth one and a crippling storm. >> living up to the label historic. >> absolutely. >>> turning now to california where a massive manhunt has the los angeles area on virtual lockdown. the lapd even putting extra security at their headquarters because the spblgt used to be one of their own. christopher dorner is wanted in multiple shootings spanning six days. the 33-year-old said he's declaring war with the lapd after losing his job. according to his late and rambling manifesto, he wants to revenge until his name is clear. he writes the violence of action will be high.

ahead. first, let's get to the news live here at 5:30 a.m. eastern time at 30 rock in new york city. we begin with new developments involving the nation's highly secretive drone campaign. members of congress demanding more details into how the administration justifies the targeted killing of american citizens. the white house says president obama has directed the department of justice to brief members of the intelligence committees. the move comes after five groups of 11 senators led by ron widen of oregon demanded insight into the government's legal rational for drone strikes against americans abroad. senator widen took his frustrations to twitter writing, every american has the right to know when their government believes it is allowed to kill them. very strong words. this, of course, follows a leaked white house memo obtained by nbc news this week detailing the criteria required for such a strike. the white house yesterday found itself under quite a bit of pressure ahead to have day's sthat confirmation hearings for john brennan, of course, nominated to be the next head of the cia. >

in new york city, the nation's largest public school operation, educators have softened the discipline code. so now students can curse at their teachers and simply get a reprimand. no suspension, just a little scolding. new york city education spokeswoman margie feinberg said new rules will keep the kids who commit low level infractions in class where they can learn from their mistakes. yeah. sure. as a former teacher, i know if the system allows students to curse out teachers in front of all students, all discipline breaks down. by the way, that's one of the reasons i said -- send my kids to catholic school in new york state. disrespect is everywhere. on the net, troubled people say the most horrendous things hiding behind their machines. on television reality program off the chart irresponsible. shows like jersey shore and this idiot thing in west virginia debase our culture all day long. the miami judge may have overreacted a bit, but he should be applauded. america has got to get back to basics. if we don't respect each other, we are headed for big trouble. i believe we are headed

heard from mike seidel in massachusetts. it's really bad there. it sounds like at least in new york city here, it may not be as bad as we thought it might get. >> yes. one little spot that didn't do so bad. we didn't think it would be historic in new york city, not like what we're seeing in hartford. we krnt goiweren't going to get points in connecticut like we were in rhode island and massachusetts. the wine gud gusts, the worst o, we saw the gust to 76 in boston, which is super impressive. i'm sure that did some damage all by itself. with the weight of the snow on the trees, i'm sure there's a lot of downed trees. i'm sure the power outages are doubling. here's a look at the storm. this looks almost like a huge hurricane. this is a big winter blizzard, call it a nor'easter if you want. we haven't had one location with three hours of visibility less than a quarter mile and winds above 35 miles per hour. that's the criteria. you need to meet both of those for three hours to be considered a blizzard. we've been close in areas like providence and boston but not quite yet. this isn't our wi
